At Dark Peak Photo, we believe that great images start with curiosity and a few of the right skills. This hands-on beginners workshop is our way of sharing what we love, helping you get to grips with your camera and start making photographs you're genuinely proud of.
Whether you're picking up a DSLR for the first time or working with a mirrorless camera, this workshop meets you where you are.
What we'll cover
We'll work through the fundamentals in a relaxed, practical way no jargon, no rush. By the end of the day you'll have a solid understanding of:
How your camera actually works aperture, shutter speed, ISO and how to use them together to get the shot you're after
Composition how to arrange what's in your frame to make images that draw people in, using techniques like the rule of thirds and leading lines
Light how to read it, work with it and use both natural and artificial sources to your advantage
Shooting in the real world we'll cover portraits, architecture, landscape and street photography, with plenty of time to get out and practise
Plenty of time behind the lens
This isn't a classroom course its a workshop and to help you to get to grips with your camera . A big part of the day is spent actually taking photographs, with guidance and feedback along the way from our tutor. You'll leave with new images, new skills and a much clearer sense of your own photographic eye.
Who is this for?
Anyone starting out with a camera. If you've been meaning to get past Auto mode, or you've just bought a camera and don't know where to begin this is the workshop is for you. Our workshops are small, friendly and designed to be a genuinely enjoyable experience.
What to bring
Your camera, charged batteries and your manual (if you have one) - Manuals can be confusing so we will show you how this works.
A notebook is handy but not essential. Just come ready to experiment. All DSLR Cameras are welcome Sony, Canon, Nixon etc
Meet Your Tutor — Carys Kaiser
With 20 years working in broadcast television and film, Carys brings a rare combination of professional experience and genuine passion for teaching to every workshop she runs.
As a freelance Shooting PD, Camera Operator, Filmmaker and Drone Pilot, Carys has worked across some of the UK's most recognised productions from BBC Breakfast and Children in Need to primetime shows on Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky and STV. Her photography work has been published in The Guardian, Digital Photographer magazine and on BBC web and social platforms, and she has exhibited in the Peak District, Glossop, London and Amsterdam. She has won two awards for aerial photography and is a Canon Pro Ambassador.
Carys has been training and mentoring emerging talent throughout her career running courses for ScreenSkills and BBC North, training professionals from ITV and BBC, guest lecturing at Edge Hill University and the University of Salford, and delivering sessions at The Photography Show. She has a straightforward, practical approach to teaching no unnecessary jargon, just real skills grounded in real experience.
